Hide Desktop Icons

Hiding and showing the Desktop Icons on Mac OSX Yosemite

I always find myself needing to show or hide my desktop icons for presentations or screen-sharing with clients or colleagues. Instead of the usual 'drag and drop' into one misc folder, the icons can be hidden with the Terminal.app.

Hide

The Mac OSX Yosemite command is a simple boolean. Open Terminal.app and type:

defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool false

Next relaunch the Finder.app with:

killall Finder

Show

To show the icons, use the first command,

defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool true

except switch the false at the end to true. Always remember to relaunch Finder.app again with:

killall Finder

Note: you can combine the Show/Hide and relaunching Finder.app by using:

defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool (false) or (true); killall Finder

Remember to switch true or false accordingly.
